The Academy Awards: Who Should Win, Who Will Win

Well it is FINALLY Oscar week. I don’t think this blog needs anymore of an introduction than that. The Academy Awards air on ABC February 22nd. Here’s my breakdown:

Visual Effects
Should Win-“The Avengers.” This choice is solely based on how awesome Robert Downey Jr. is.
Will Win- Possible “The Hobbit?” I don’t know, I was busy seeing all the other movies during the holidays. Are the elves or dwarfs or whatever they are suppose to look good in 3D?

Best Adapted Screenplay
Should Win- David O. Russell for “Silver Linings Playbook.” It’s beautifully done and he made us laugh and understand mental illness in film like its never been done before.
Will Win- I think David has a real shot.

Best Original Screenplay
Should Win- Mark Boal for “Zero Dark Thirty.” I can only imagine what he went through to write that script. The reason the film keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole time is because of Boal’s storytelling. And how can you not love this story?
Will Win- Tarantino writes a story about fake blood and not much else and will win. Damn you Tarantino.

Best Original Song
Should Win- Adele for “Skyfall.” How cool would it be if she won a Golden Globe, Grammy, and Oscar all in the course of two weeks? And her acceptance speech would be hilarious I’m sure.
Will Win- Thank God we will get to hear that acceptance speech!

Best Original Score
Should Win- “Lincoln.” “Lincoln.” “Lincoln.”
Will Win- Something stupid like “Life of Pi.”

Best Director
Should Win- Ben Affleck.
Will Win- What? He’s not nominated? Then who the hell cares.

Best Supporting Actor
Should Win- This never happens, but I honestly don’t care. I love them all so much I can’t choose. Plus, they have all won before.
Will Win- Christoph Waltz, what will you do with another Oscar?

Best Supporting Actress
Should Win- Anne Hathaway. Everything about her is perfect in “Les Mis.”
Will Win- There is no way Anne isn’t winning.

Best Actress
Should Win- Well, here we are. This category has been driving me crazy all season long. Jennifer Lawrence deserves an Oscar for her role in “Silver Linings Playbook.” There are no if, ands, or buts. She’s going to cry buckets and probably say something rude and offensive in her acceptance speech and then call Harvey Weinstein a “rascal” again. Words cannot describe how excited I am for this moment.
Will Win- It’s hard to say. Observing like I do all award season, I think it just might be J-Law. Her role has the depth and uniqueness the Academy loves. But, the Academy obviously loves Jessica Chastain. I can see them just as easily giving it to her. They love war heroins. On the other hand they also love to nominate little girls who have no idea what an Oscar means and old French ladies. Case in point- the Academy has been one to surprise especially in the lead categories. That’s why it’s the award that matters. I think the Academy knows Lawrence is the one, but they are going to keep us guessing all night long.

Best Actor
Should Win- Bradley Cooper. What? I am not being biased. Bradley will never get another role like this if he keeps making “Hangovers.” He is pure magic in “Silver Linings Playbook.” He’s funny and makes you feel. Isn’t that the best kind of character actor out there?
Will Win- Unfortunately, everyone has been put in a category with Daniel Day Lewis, so no matter how good they were in their film they stand no chance. Is there a rule in the Academy handbook that says Daniel Day must win every single time he’s nominated? I mean he has won for a movie that had “foot” in the title for God’s sake. And now he is going to be the first male to ever win three Oscars for Best Actor. Three! For playing everybody’s favorite President! He’s not even American! Academy, I get it you love him, but come on! Can you ever give anyone else a chance? And Daniel why are you so good?!

Best Picture
Should Win- “Argo.”
Will Win- “Argo.” No doubt about it. Ben’s going to bawl and say nice things to his wife. I cannot contain my excitement.
